Job Description

Scientist – mRNA Process & Analytical Development / Technology Transfer

Location: Monza, Italy

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, our mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. Within our expanding mRNA/LNP platform, we develop and scale next-generation RNA technologies that power innovative therapeutic solutions worldwide.

If you are a scientist who wants to see your work move beyond the bench and into manufacturing — this is your opportunity.

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and driven Scientist to join our growing international team at the forefront of mRNA and lipid nanoparticle (LNP) process development.

This role sits at the intersection of process development and technology transfer, where science meets scalability. You will transform customer and internal mRNA/LNP processes into robust, manufacturing-ready solutions — directly impacting therapeutic programs.

You will work hands-on across the full mRNA workflow, including:

  • Bioreactor-based in vitro transcription (IVT)

  • FPLC purification (AKTA systems)

  • LNP formulation

  • Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF)

Your experiments will not remain theoretical — you will see them scale, transfer, and operate in real-world manufacturing environments.

This position is ideal for scientists who thrive in technically dynamic environments where scientific challenges evolve rapidly and priorities shift in response to innovative projects.

Your Impact

  • Develop, optimize, and characterize upstream and downstream mRNA processes

  • Drive scale-up and scale-down studies to build robust, scalable development strategies

  • Lead and support technology transfer activities from customer processes into internal PD and manufacturing environments

  • Translate experimental findings into clear technical documentation, protocols, and development reports

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with MSAT, Manufacturing, QC/Analytical Development, Supply Chain, and Project Management

  • Contribute to investigations, troubleshooting, and continuous process improvements

  • Present data-driven recommendations to internal stakeholders

  • Mentor junior scientists and contribute to building technical excellence within the team

Your Profile

You are a hands-on scientist who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and seeing your work implemented at scale. You are analytical, adaptable, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced development environment.

Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related field with relevant industry experience
    or

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, or related discipline with postdoctoral or industrial experience

Technical Expertise

  • Proven experience in mRNA/LNP process development or hands-on RNA/DNA processing in scalable, non–kit-based environments

  • Strong experience with chromatography systems (AKTA/FPLC) and TFF

  • Familiarity with regulated or industrial manufacturing environments

  • Exposure to RNA analytical techniques (e.g., U/HPLC, CE, Ribogreen assay, DLS) is a strong advantage

  • Experience in technology transfer or scale-up is highly desirable

Working Style

  • Strong analytical mindset and structured problem-solving approach

  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-moving environment

  • Clear and confident technical communication skills

  • Collaborative, proactive, and solution-oriented attitude

Language Requirements

  • Fluent English

  • Intermediate Italian (to support effective site collaboration)

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • Work at the cutting edge of mRNA and LNP technologies

  • See your scientific work translate into manufacturing reality

  • Join an international, multidisciplinary team with strong technical depth

  • Contribute to programs that advance next-generation therapeutics

  • Grow professionally in a fast-evolving field with strong development opportunities

  • Operate in an environment where science, scalability, and impact intersect

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, your expertise will directly enable scientific progress — turning innovative RNA technologies into scalable therapeutic solutions that make a real-world difference
