Senior Engineer, Data Historian and Analytics

The Role

Moderna is seeking a Senior Engineer specializing in GMP manufacturing data historian and operational analytics systems to design, implement, support, and advance digital manufacturing data platforms across our manufacturing network.

This is a pharmaceutical manufacturing systems engineering role. The successful candidate will have hands-on experience with industrial data historians, manufacturing control-system integration, operational reporting and visualization, and the lifecycle management of computerized systems within a regulated GMP environment.

The Senior Engineer will provide technical ownership and engineering leadership for platforms such as the AVEVA/OSIsoft PI System, SIMCA analytical systems that collect and contextualize data from manufacturing equipment and automation platforms such as Emerson DeltaV.

The role will work closely with Manufacturing, Automation, Engineering, Quality, and Digital teams to ensure manufacturing data is reliable, contextualized, accessible, secure, and fit for GMP operational and analytical use.

This position is based in Norwood, MA.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

·         Serve as a technical subject matter expert for manufacturing data historian, operational analytics, visualization, and reporting systems supporting GMP manufacturing operations.

·         Design, configure, implement, validate, and maintain manufacturing data historian solutions, including historian data structures, asset models, calculations, interfaces, visualization, and reporting capabilities.

·         Provide technical ownership for AVEVA/OSIsoft PI System components and integrations, including PI Data Archive, Asset Framework, PI Vision, and historian interfaces/connectors, as applicable.

·         Provide technical ownership for SIMCA analytical systems to educate and drive user adoption with stakeholders and end users.

·         Develop and maintain integrations between manufacturing data systems and automation/control platforms such as Emerson DeltaV, using industrial communication technologies including OPC UA and MQTT.

·         Partner with Manufacturing, Automation, Process Engineering, MS&T, Quality, and other stakeholders to identify manufacturing data requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.

·         Assist in development and maintenance of SIMCA data models that contextualize process, equipment, batch, and manufacturing data for operational monitoring, troubleshooting, process understanding, reporting, and advanced analytics.

·         Design and support manufacturing dashboards, reports, calculations, and analytical applications using historian data and technologies such as Grafana, Tableau, Power BI, SIMCA, Informetric, or similar platforms.

·         Ensure manufacturing data integrity, availability, reliability, and appropriate contextualization across source systems, historian platforms, and downstream applications.

·         Troubleshoot historian, interface, data collection, reporting, and application issues and perform structured root-cause analysis.

·         Lead or support system lifecycle activities including architecture and design documentation, configuration, installation, testing, commissioning, validation, upgrades, periodic reviews, and retirement.

·         Apply GAMP, computer system validation, data integrity, and GMP requirements throughout the system lifecycle.

·         Perform system and application risk assessments and support validated change control, testing, and release activities.

·         Mentor and train fellow Engineers

 

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Automation, or a related technical or scientific field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting manufacturing information, automation, historian, or operational technology systems within biotechnology, pharmaceutical, life sciences, or another regulated manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience implementing, configuring, supporting, or administering an industrial data historian, preferably AVEVA/OSIsoft PI System.
• Experience working with manufacturing process and equipment data originating from DCS, PLC, SCADA, or other industrial automation systems.
• Experience integrating manufacturing systems using technologies or protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, SQL, XML, APIs, or similar industrial/data integration technologies.
• Experience with Emerson DeltaV or comparable process-control platforms.
• Working knowledge of GMP manufacturing operations, cGMP requirements, and regulated computerized systems.
• Understanding of computer system validation and GAMP principles, including system lifecycle documentation, testing, change control, and risk-based validation.
• Working knowledge of ISA-95 concepts and the integration of manufacturing systems across automation, operations management, and enterprise system layers.
• Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose data collection, connectivity, application, configuration, and system-performance issues.

 

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

• Deep experience with the AVEVA/OSIsoft PI ecosystem, including PI Data Archive, PI Asset Framework, PI Vision, calculations/analytics, and PI interfaces or connectors.
• Experience designing manufacturing historian architectures and data models for batch and continuous manufacturing environments.
• Experience contextualizing historian data using equipment, process, batch, recipe, or ISA-95 manufacturing models.
• Experience with manufacturing visualization and operational analytics tools such as Grafana, Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent platforms.
• Experience with multivariate or process analytics platforms such as SIMCA.
• Experience with manufacturing reporting platforms such as Informetric InfoBatch/InfoLog or comparable applications.
• Experience integrating historian and analytics solutions with MES, LIMS, CMMS, ERP, or other manufacturing applications.
• Understanding of data integrity expectations for regulated manufacturing systems, including principles associated with attributable, legible, contemporaneous, original, and accurate manufacturing data.
• Experience developing SQL queries, calculations, scripts, or application configurations used to transform, contextualize, analyze, or present manufacturing data.
• Experience working directly with Manufacturing, Automation, Engineering, MS&T, and Quality organizations to translate operational needs into technical requirements.
• Experience supporting validated systems in a production environment, including incident management, change control, system upgrades, and lifecycle management.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a global, matrixed organization.

The salary range for this role is $145,900.00 - $234,200.00. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An individual’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance, and business or organizational needs. The successful candidate may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, other incentive compensation, or equity award, subject to company plan eligibility criteria and individual performance.
