Roles Available in Location: Ware, Worthing, Barnard Castle

Education required: See individual roles for degree requirements.
 

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

Role 1 - Barnard Castle
 

Degree requirements: Business, Operational Excellence, Psychology, Geography, Open to any

Overview of the Department

Barnard Castle is a key secondary site for GSK with many New Products coming through development at site. We manufacture and supply a huge range of different pharmaceutical products from Sterile Products (Syringes and Vials) to Liquid Inhalations and Dermatologicals. The successful candidate will integrate into the support teams and be expected to deliver a business or compliance improvement project. Project specifics will be agreed at the time of placement depending on area activities and course of study - these may include specific improvement activities or product aligned support (e.g., Product campaign and improvements, inspection readiness, KPI monitoring and performance management).

Key Placement Learnings

• Supporting New Product Introduction (NPI)
• Supporting manufacturing processes and equipment for existing products
• Continuous Improvement (CI) project delivery
• Co-ordination and implementation of planned change
• Supporting troubleshooting of processes and manufacturing investigations.
• Developing skills in continuous improvement and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)

Role 2 – Worthing
 

Degree requirements: Biomedical, Engineering or Life Sciences, Science Based degrees

Overview of the Department

The Worthing MSAT team is accountable for the control and quality of the product portfolio. We use data, science and risk assessment to ensure reproducible process delivering to our patients.

We are a key lever in creating opportunities through process improvement, simplification and strategic project delivery.

Key Placement Learnings

• Provide technical support for manufacturing processes and production equipment, troubleshooting issues through investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs).
• Support pharmaceutical product quality and process control through validation activities, contamination control, process verification, product control strategy execution, and data analysis/trending.
• Manage and support GMP compliance activities including deviations, change control, risk management, self-inspections, customer/vendor complaints, audit participation, inspection readiness, and quality documentation maintenance.
• Drive continuous improvement by identifying process optimisation opportunities, delivering data-driven solutions, managing improvement projects, and tracking actions against business and operational targets.
• Collaborate across functions to support strategic projects, generate technical reports, communicate findings, and contribute to operational excellence within pharmaceutical manufacturing.
• Develop expertise in Manufacturing Science and Quality Systems, gaining an understanding of critical quality attributes, regulatory requirements, and business drivers impacting product quality and performance.

Role 3 – Ware
 

Degree requirements: Life Sciences or Pharmaceutical Sciences

Overview of the Department

The Manufacturing, Science and Technology (MSAT) team monitor the performance of products and equipment platforms within the three production streams. The department oversees all aspects of product lifecycle management, from introduction and scale up of newly developed R&D assets to ensuring robust and repeatable manufacture of commercialised pharmaceutical products.

The MSAT department is responsible for managing and supporting all technical aspects of commercial drug product manufacture at the Ware GSK site. This includes product life cycle management, troubleshooting during manufacturing, planned changes, process improvements, transfer of drug products to new facilities and to other GSK/third party sites, support of regulatory filing, and site audit activities.

Key Placement Learnings

• Trouble shooting during manufacturing and testing of commercial OSD, Respiratory and Micronising drug products
• Involvement in drug product transfers and validation projects within the production facilities
• Managing cleaning validation and annual cleaning monitoring activities
• Leading deviation investigations and manufacturing investigations for atypical/out of specification laboratory results
• Involvement in manufacturing trials for newly developed products
• Supporting the MSAT team in delivering key milestones for new product development
• Leading process improvement projects relating to transfer of products from R&D to manufacturing sites
• Writing technical protocols, reports, and drug product impact assessments

• Monitoring performance of products manufactured at the Ware site
• Leading product performance investigations, working in conjunction with other members of the department, Laboratories and Operational Quality
• Supporting the management of risks associated with product performance
• Identifying and delivering opportunities for improvement
• Using Digital Data and Analytics tools to support the above activities
