Roles Available in Location: Stevenage, GSK HQ – London, Addenbrooke's Hospital - Cambridge

 Other requirements:  You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

The Roles (6 available)

Role 1 - Development Operations - Non-interventional Studies – Project Manager 
 

Degrees required: Currently studying a bachelor’s degree in project management, Business, Business Analytics, Finance, Life Science (e.g. biology, chemistry, biomedical sciences) or related field.

Overview of the Department 
 

Global Clinical Operations is a multidisciplinary department within which the Non-Interventional Study (NIS) Project Management team sit.  The NIS Project Management team are a global team that manage project plans to operationalise evidence generation activities to demonstrate the value of our medicines to Regulators, Payers and Healthcare Professionals.   The scientists, whom the Project Management team support, conduct multiple activities across the areas of Health Economics, Health Outcomes, Patient Centred Outcomes, Patient Insights, Digital Biomarkers, Epidemiology and Data Analytics.    

 

Key Placement Learnings 

• Build and manage Project Plans in Planisware aligned to evidence generation strategies, gaining insight into the breadth of evidence generation activities and their contribution to the overall drug development process.  

• Maintain active project plans, including timelines, budgets and new activities, developing practical project management skills while ensuring activities are delivered on schedule and within budget expectations.  

• Analyse and interpret project data to prepare reports, dashboards and presentation materials for project teams and senior management discussions.  

• Gain hands-on experience using project management systems and data to support planning, resource management and business decision-making.  

• Develop key business skills including project management, change management, strategic thinking and financial management, alongside a broader understanding of pharmaceutical research and drug development.  

• Learn the importance of data quality, governance and compliance through maintaining accurate project information and adherence to established ways of working.  

• Contribute to process improvement initiatives, team knowledge-sharing activities and onboarding resources, strengthening communication and stakeholder management skills. 

 

Role 2 - ViiV Clinical Sciences & Operations – GSK HQ 
 

Degrees required: Relevant Life Sciences degree (e.g., Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, or similar).

Overview of the Department 
 

Clinical Sciences & Operations is the function within ViiV Healthcare responsible for the scientific design, execution and delivery of clinical development programmes. Working across global, cross-functional teams, the department supports the progression of innovative HIV medicines from study concept and protocol development through to study execution, regulatory submission and reporting. The team collaborates closely with a wide range of stakeholders, including Clinical Pharmacology, Medical and Commercial teams, to ensure clinical studies are conducted to the highest scientific, ethical and quality standards. 

 

Key Placement Learnings 
 

During this placement, you will have the opportunity to: 

• Develop an understanding of clinical drug development, including study design, protocol development and the generation of clinical evidence to support HIV medicines. 

• Gain hands-on experience supporting the delivery of global clinical studies, working alongside cross-functional teams to help ensure studies are conducted in line with protocols, timelines and quality requirements. 

• Build critical thinking and data literacy skills through the review and interpretation of clinical and safety data, contributing to evidence-based decision making. 

• Enhance scientific communication skills by supporting the preparation of clinical study reports, presentations and regulatory documents that communicate study outcomes. 

• Strengthen collaboration and stakeholder management skills by working with colleagues across Clinical Pharmacology, Medical, Commercial and other global functions. 

• Develop key professional capabilities including project management, adaptability, initiative, time management and an appreciation of working within a highly regulated GxP environment. 

 

 

Role 3 – ViiV Clinical Supply Team – GSK HQ
 

Degrees required: Open to any science related degree

Overview of the Department
 

The Clinical Supply Team’s (CST) focus is on patient safety, ethical trial conduct, and cost-effective supply solutions to support ViiV Healthcare's mission of advancing HIV treatments and research. Fit for supply’, ‘fit for distribution and storage’, ‘fit for Medical Professional and Patient Use’.   CST is responsible for ensuring the compliant, seamless delivery of investigational medicinal products (IMPs) for supported clinical trials. They manage the supply of pipeline and launched products, ensuring that therapies are available for patients without interruption. The team works cross-functionally with Study Supply Leads, Regulatory, Procurement, Global Medical, Finance, and other stakeholders to develop supply strategies, maintain compliance with global regulatory requirements (e.g., ICH, cGMP, GDP, GCP), and optimize operational efficiency.  CST falls within Global Medical Sciences which is the function that bridges research, development, and medical affairs to support the scientific and clinical development of HIV therapies. GMS focuses on translating scientific insights into actionable strategies, driving innovation in HIV care, and ensuring ethical and compliant clinical trial conduct to improve patient outcomes. 

 

Key Placement Learnings 

• Supply Strategy Execution: Supporting Study Supply Leads (SSLs) in developing and implementing VH Product supply strategies to maintain uninterrupted therapy and compliance. 

• Operational & Organisational Support: Utilising strong organisational skills to prioritise tasks, ensure accuracy, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment while supporting CST operations & supply chain initiatives. 

• Data Management and Analysis: Ensuring accuracy and integrity of data across clinical supply systems, analysing trends, and utilizing tools like Excel and Power BI for informed decision-making. 

• Stakeholder Communication: Maintaining and overseeing real-time communication & digital tools to manage interactions with internal teams, external vendors, and matrix functions. 

• Audit Readiness and Compliance: Preparing for audits by ensuring data integrity, adherence to regulatory requirements (cGMP, GDP, GCP), and archiving quality-checked documentation. 

• Financial Oversight: Supporting budgeting, forecasting, invoice tracking, and resolution of finance-related issues within the clinical supply program. 

 

Role 4 – Development Operations - Non-interventional Studies – Study Delivery Lead
 

Degrees required: Biomedical Sciences or Life-Sciences

Overview of the Department 
 

The Value, Evidence and Outcomes department is focused on generating evidence that enables us to get the right medicine to the right patient at the right time.  We do this by conducting studies that demonstrate the value of our medicines to regulators (e.g. MHRA), Payers (e.g. NICE) and Healthcare Professionals, optimising patient benefit and access to GSK medicines. Our activities are wide ranging including interventional studies, non-interventional studies, registry studies, safety studies, patient interview and survey studies, economic modelling and studies using pre-existing data sources (e.g. electronic medical records, claims databases).   

 

The Study Delivery team within VEO are accountable for the on time and on budget delivery of all VEO activities to the highest scientific, quality and ethical standards 

 

Key Placement Activities 

• Planning and supporting the delivery of NIS P&D studies to time, quality, budget, company standards and scientific requirements from concept protocol to final study report.  

• Supporting the coordination and delivery of a fully feasible Study Protocol, and any other relevant study documentation.  

• Supporting SDL in the study delivery strategy (e.g. country selection, diversity, patient identification and engagement strategy, recruitment plan, digital platforms/tools etc).  

• With many NIS P&D studies fully outsourced this role includes responsibility and/or accountability to drive assessment, selection, engagement, and management of appropriate vendors.  

• Working with matrix partners, manager and/or NIS P&D TA Study Delivery Head to develop and manage study level budget within project budget allocation  

• Ensuring prompt escalation of study and project level issues and risks to manager or NIS P&D TA Study Delivery Head, as appropriate 

 

Role 5 – Global Clinical Study Delivery GSK HQ
 

Degrees required: Life Sciences

Overview of the Department
 

Our team plan, execute and deliver patient‑centric clinical studies across all regions. We combine standardized processes, modern tools and data‑driven decision‑making with strong cross‑functional collaboration to ensure studies are safe, compliant and delivered on time. Our focus is operational excellence, continuous improvement and ultimately accelerating development to bring better treatments to patients. 

 

Key Placement Activities 

• Supported clinical study set-up activities, ensuring essential documentation, systems, and processes were in place for study initiation.  

• Assisted with project management activities throughout the study lifecycle, including planning, tracking milestones, and coordinating deliverables.  

• Supported the preparation and submission of ethics applications and associated regulatory documentation for designated studies.  

• Coordinated with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate efficient study start-up, conduct, and close-out activities.  

• Monitored study progress and maintained study records to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures.  

• Contributed to study close-out activities, supporting documentation management and project completion processes. 

 

Role 6 – GSK Clinical Unit Cambridge

Overview of the Department 
 

The Clinical Unit Cambridge (CUC) is GSK’s MHRA-accredited early phase clinical research unit, responsible for the delivery of Phase I and early Phase II studies. Located within the Cambridge biomedical ecosystem, CUC specialises in the design and execution of complex clinical trials in healthy volunteers and patient populations. The unit brings together a multidisciplinary team of clinical, operational, and scientific experts to deliver studies end‑to‑end—from feasibility and study set‑up through to execution and close‑out. 

 

Key Placement Activities 

• Cross-functional coordination for study delivery 

• Liaising with internal teams, including Clinical Operations, Pharmacy, and Data Management, to support the end-to-end delivery of studies.  

• Helping to ensure study activities are aligned with project timelines and operational requirements. 

• Regulatory and study start-up support 

• Assisting with the preparation and coordination of ethics and regulatory submissions. 

• Supporting the management of study amendments and essential study documentation. 

• Meeting coordination and stakeholder engagement 

• Organising and coordinating study and team meetings. 

• Preparing meeting minutes, tracking actions, and following up on agreed deliverables. 

• Occasionally chairing meetings where appropriate. 

• Process improvement and project support 

• Contributing to non-study project workstreams and department initiatives.

• Assisting with technology and process improvement projects to enhance study delivery within CUC.
