LUPRON DEPOT (leuprolide acetate) is a long-acting GnRH analog administered via intramuscular injection, approved in 1990 for endometriosis management including pain relief and reduction of endometriotic lesions. The drug works by initially stimulating pituitary gonadotropins, followed by prolonged suppression that decreases gonadal steroid secretion, rendering hormone-dependent tissues quiescent. This mechanism is reversible upon discontinuation, making it a reversible hormonal therapy for women with endometriosis.
