Furosemide is a loop diuretic that blocks sodium and chloride reabsorption in the ascending limb of the Loop of Henle, making it one of the most potent diuretics available. It is indicated for heart failure and hypertension, working through a unique mechanism independent of carbonic anhydrase or aldosterone inhibition. This injectable formulation has been a standard of care for acute decompensated heart failure and resistant hypertension for over 40 years.
As an established drug approaching loss of exclusivity with moderate competitive pressure (30%), the brand team is likely focused on generic transition planning and defensive strategies rather than growth initiatives.
Henle. The high degree of efficacy is largely due to this unique site of action. The action on the distal tubule is independent of any inhibitory effect on carbonic anhydrase and aldosterone.
