Staff Scientist - Sensor Design Lead

The Company

Dexcom Corporation (NASDAQ DXCM) is a pioneer and global leader in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). Dexcom began as a small company with a big dream: To forever change how diabetes is managed. To unlock information and insights that drive better health outcomes. Here we are 25 years later, having pioneered an industry. And we're just getting started. We are broadening our vision beyond diabetes to empower people to take control of health. That means personalized, actionable insights aimed at solving important health challenges. To continue what we've started: Improving human health.

We are driven by thousands of ambitious, passionate people worldwide who are willing to fight like warriors to earn the trust of our customers by listening, serving with integrity, thinking big, and being dependable. We've already changed millions of lives and we're ready to change millions more. Our future ambition is to become a leading consumer health technology company while continuing to develop solutions for serious health conditions. We'll get there by constantly reinventing unique biosensing-technology experiences. Though we've come a long way from our small company days, our dreams are bigger than ever. The opportunity to improve health on a global scale stands before us.

Meet the team:

The Sensor Design and Characterization group within the Research and Development (R&D) organization is dedicated to the design and development of cutting-edge sensor technologies, guiding them from initial concept through to commercialization. These innovations are essential to improving the accuracy, reliability, and robustness of continuous health monitoring systems. Our multidisciplinary team brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds and experience levels, fostering a collaborative and dynamic environment that drives creative problem-solving and breakthrough solutions. In this role, you will lead technical projects spanning new product development and research initiatives, while providing deep domain expertise in sensor design and characterization.

Where you come in:

• You will provide technical leadership and mentorship in refining current designs and defining future architectural strategies for amperometric, potentiometric, and coulometric biosensor technologies.
• You will lead proof-of-concept initiatives for biosensor and electrochemical technologies, advancing them from initial concept through clinical and commercial feasibility.
• You will anticipate technical risks, define technical strategies and development approaches, drive resolution of complex challenges that materially impact technical outcomes, evaluate critical trade-offs, and influence the decisions and direction of other technical contributors.
• You will design and execute benchtop and in-vivo experiments to assess both current and emerging sensor technologies at the component, sensor subassembly, and integrated system levels.
• You will apply statistical methods to analyze large datasets, evaluate sensor performance, and identify key performance-driving parameters.
• You will iterate on sensor designs using sound scientific principles and a data-driven approach, recommending enhancements that improve product accuracy, reliability, flexibility, or functionality.
• You will collaborate with cross-functional teams within and beyond R&D to efficiently meet project milestones, proactively managing interdependencies.
• You will communicate findings through clear oral presentations tailored to both technical peers and leadership audiences.
• You will contribute to intellectual property development by drafting invention disclosures and supporting patent filings.

What makes you successful:

• You have a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• You have deep technical expertise in the design and characterization of biosensors and electrochemical systems—ideally within the medical device industry.
• You have a demonstrated track record of applying advanced scientific reasoning, sound engineering judgment, and multidisciplinary analysis to solve complex, ambiguous, and novel technical challenges.
• You are able to integrate deep technical expertise with product requirements, development risks, verification and validation evidence, and manufacturing considerations to develop robust, scalable, and sustainable technical solutions.
• You have hands-on experience working in a wet lab environment.
• You are proficient in statistical and data analysis tools such as JMP, Origin, Python, MATLAB, or R.
• You possess a strong work ethic and excellent organizational skills.
• You have exceptional scientific communication skills—both verbal and written—and thrive in collaborative environments.

What you’ll get:

• A front row seat to life changing CGM technology. Learn about our brave #dexcomwarriors community.
• A full and comprehensive benefits program.
• Growth opportunities on a global scale.
• Access to career development through in-house learning programs and/or qualified tuition reimbursement.
• An exciting and innovative, industry-leading organization committed to our employees, customers, and the communities we serve.

Travel Required:

• 0-5%

Education and Experience:

• Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 8-12 years related experience or Master’s degree and 5-7 years equivalent industry experience or a PhD and 2-4 years experience.
