Position Summary
The Category Manager – Packaging is an individual contributor within Global Procurement, reporting directly to the Director of Direct Procurement with dotted line reporting to Global Procurement Packaging Manager. This role is responsible for managing packaging category strategy, supplier performance, and sourcing execution for manufacturing locations in Malaysia and China. The position partners cross-functionally with Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Finance to ensure cost-effective, compliant, and reliable packaging supply.
Key Responsibilities
· Own and execute packaging category strategies for Malaysia and China manufacturing sites in coordination with Global Procurement Packaging Manager.
· Lead supplier sourcing, negotiations, contracting, and ongoing performance management.
· Act as the primary procurement contact for regional packaging suppliers, managing escalations and continuous improvement.
· Support new product introductions, packaging changes, supplier qualifications, and capacity expansions in collaboration with Engineering and Operations.
· Drive cost reduction initiatives, should-cost analysis, and productivity programs.
· Manage supplier risk through assessments, business continuity planning, and mitigation actions.
· Ensure supplier compliance with quality systems, regulatory requirements, and ESG standards.
· Track and report key category metrics related to cost, quality, delivery, and risk.
· Support CAPEX, and OPEX planning in partnership with Finance.
· Participate in root cause analysis and corrective actions for supplier-related issues.
Education and Experience Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, or a related field.
· Ideally 5-8 years of experience in procurement, supply management, engineering, or operations.
· Experience managing suppliers and categories in a regulated manufacturing environment (medical device or similar preferred).
· Knowledge of packaging materials, components, and supplier manufacturing processes.
· Experience working with suppliers in China and Malaysia.
· Strong negotiation, analytical, and financial skills.
· Proven track record of delivery of results
Preferred Skills and Competencies
· Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Experience with SAP or similar ERP systems; Power BI or reporting tools a plus.
· Six Sigma or continuous improvement experience preferred.
· Contract negotiation experience
Travel & Work Arrangement
· Ability to travel to supplier and manufacturing sites as needed.
· On-site role based in Malaysia
