Sr. Commercial Paralegal – Cancer Diagnostics
The Opportunity
This position works out of our Madison, WI location in the Cancer Diagnostics Division. This is an on-site position.
The Sr. Commercial Paralegal will provide legal services and resolve legal matters for assigned responsibilities or clients. Supports the business in the achievement of business objectives by communicating advice of the Legal Department and managing legal risks to the corporation.
What You’ll Work On
- Serves as primary resource for reviewing and processing medical record requests, Powers of Attorney (POA), guardianship orders and other legal authorization materials submitted by patients, family members, healthcare representatives and others seeking authority to act on behalf of patients, including collecting medical records, communicating with external sources regarding those requests.
- Evaluates guardianship and POA documentation under varying state-law requirements, with guidance from attorneys, exercising judgment regarding validity, scope of authority, healthcare decision-making rights and authorization to access PHI.
- Provides guidance on legal authorization requirements and appropriate documentation needed to support patient and customer requests.
- Monitors shared contracting and legal inboxes and triages mail received by the legal department, including subpoenas, government inquiries, garnishment requests, legal notices, service of process documents and other legal correspondence ensuring routing and escalation to appropriate stakeholders.
- Functions as critical operational link among Legal, Customer Experience, Compliance and Privacy teams to facilitate legally compliant and efficient handling of patient-related matters.
- Performs substantive legal work that requires knowledge of legal concepts including analysis, drafting, negotiating and consulting.
- Interfaces with internal clients in preparing, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements including professional services agreements, interface agreements and confidentiality disclosure agreements.
- Reviews internal and external communication materials such as medical education and promotional materials on behalf of the legal department.
- Provides legal services in support of business objectives and resolves matters for assigned responsibilities.
- Identifies and resolves routine and moderately complex legal matters in area of responsibility with minimal supervision from senior paralegals and/or attorneys.
- Assists attorneys in resolving complex legal issues on projects involving multiple functional areas or divisions within Abbott.
- Develops knowledge of Abbott’s businesses supported and knowledge of the broader business impact.
- Keeps abreast of changes in laws that affect client areas.
- Represents Legal Division internally to clients.
- Helps maintain agreements in the contract lifecycle management system.
- Supports the preparation of legal presentations on various topics.
- Other responsibilities, as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree and / or ABA approved Paralegal Certificate or equivalent experience.
- 4+ years of relevant experience
- Must have familiarity with basic laws related to applicable areas of responsibility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience reviewing agreements/contracts and the ability to interpret and synthesize information from various sources to achieve superior outcomes.
- Must be self-motivated and detail-oriented with high work standards.
- High level of discretion, maturity and ethical integrity
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, proofreading and organizational skills, with a focus on continuous process improvement
- Ability to multi-task, work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced environment, proactively thinking through challenges and coming up with pragmatic workable solutions.
