Upgrade to Pro — $25/moAbout the Ethos Design System (EDS)
EDS is the unified digital platform that powers GE HealthCare’s global software portfolio. It serves as a comprehensive library of reusable UI components, design patterns, and accessibility standards that bridge the critical gap between User Experience (UX) and Engineering. By fostering a philosophy of "reduce, reuse, and recycle," EDS enables hundreds of product teams to eliminate redundant coding and design work. We provide the foundational building blocks that ensure our clinical and operational applications are intuitive, consistent, and accessible, allowing teams to focus on patient safety.
The Mission: Scale and Empowerment
We are in a phase of hyper-growth, scaling from 25 adopting products to over 100. This requires an architect who thinks like a platform owner, not just a component builder. You must look beyond individual implementation details to think about scale, governance, and empowerment. You will define the architectural foundations and self-service patterns that let teams move fast without breaking the consistency, compatibility, and accessibility standards required for patient safety.
Core Responsibilities:
1. Architecture & Platform Design
Platform Architecture: Define and evolve scalable architecture for shared UI and design system platforms.
Framework-Agnostic Foundations: Establish framework-agnostic foundations such as design tokens, styling, shared behavior, and interaction patterns. Drive architectural consistency across Web Components.
Adapter & API Strategy: Define the right approach for framework adapters, native implementations, package structure, and component APIs. Own public API boundaries, backwards compatibility, versioning, deprecation, and migration strategy.
2. Quality, Performance & Technical Debt
Quality Strategy: Define quality strategy across unit, component, accessibility, visual regression, integration, and E2E testing. Establish release-blocking quality gates and compatibility expectations.
Performance Engineering: Diagnose and improve rendering, DOM, memory, bundle-size, and framework-integration performance. Define measurable performance baselines, budgets, and engineering health metrics rather than subjective assessments.
Debt Prioritization: Prioritize technical and QA debt based on customer impact, adoption, risk, and maintainability.
3. Roadmap & Cross-Team Enablement
Architecture Roadmap: Create architecture roadmaps and guide long-term evolution without unnecessary rewrites, aligning with product priorities.
Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner with Leadership, Product, UX, QA, DevOps, and engineering teams to drive architecture decisions and adoption across organizational boundaries.
Migration Support: Support consuming teams with migration, integration, and compatibility challenges. Drive adoption across consuming applications rather than focusing only on platform implementation.
Core Competencies:
Communicating Trade-offs & Alignment: Exceptional ability to communicate complex architectural concepts by clearly explaining options, technical trade-offs, risks, and long-term implications. Works closely with internal customers across cross-functional engineering, UX, and product teams to ensure alignment and secure buy-in.
Architectural Ownership: Acts as the clear architectural owner for the UI and Design System platform. Demonstrates cross-team architectural ownership rather than experience limited to individual contributor delivery.
Applied AI for Development: Uses AI-assisted engineering for refactoring, testing, migrations, documentation, debugging, and code review. Understands model selection and context/token management. Can define safe team-level AI development practices (validation, security, human-review controls) and demonstrate measurable improvements in productivity.
Evidence-Based Direction: Challenges existing architecture when required and can demonstrate examples where technical direction was corrected based on evidence.
Mentorship: Mentors senior engineers and Tech Leads, raising architectural capability across the team. Balances scalability, compatibility, performance, developer experience, security, and delivery needs.
Education Qualification:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Computer Science or “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
Required Skills:
Experience: 10–14 years of experience in front-end/UI engineering.
Mandatory: Proven experience architecting enterprise-scale UI platforms or large design systems used by multiple teams and applications.
UX Collaboration:
Mandatory: 6+ years of experience partnering closely with UX, Product, and Design teams to define architecture that scales across products.
Deep understanding of React, Angular, TypeScript, Web Components, HTML, CSS, and browser fundamentals.
Strong knowledge of multi-framework architecture, framework-agnostic design principles, and supporting multiple framework versions simultaneously.
Experience with design tokens, theming, styling architecture, shared behavior, and component composition.
Tooling & Process:
Strong understanding of API design, package architecture, dependency management, changesets, semantic versioning, and migration planning/codemods.
Experience with design-system governance, component lifecycle, release management, and adoption analytics.
Strong understanding of CI/CD, build pipelines, package publishing, cloud infrastructure, monitoring, and release governance.
Good understanding of backend systems, APIs, authentication, integration patterns, and distributed application architecture.
Inclusion and Diversity:
GE Healthcare is an Equal Opportunity Employer where inclusion matters. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, colour, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, protected veteran status or other characteristics protected by law.
