The Smith+Nephew Leadership Development Programme (LDP) is designed to attract and develop talented graduates who aspire to build a career in Operations and Manufacturing. This two-year rotational programme offers an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop leadership capabilities, and make a meaningful impact within a global medical technology company dedicated to helping people live Life Unlimited.

 Programme Structure

 Over the course of 24 months, participants will complete multiple rotations across key Operations and Manufacturing functions including Production, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and Continuous Improvement. Each rotation provides practical experience and professional development, complemented by structured learning, mentoring, and exposure to senior leaders. Participants will develop a broad understanding of Smith+Nephew’s end-to-end operations, from product design and manufacturing to delivery and continuous improvement, while contributing to initiatives that enhance quality, efficiency, and sustainability.

 Role Purpose As an LDP Associate, you will support and lead process improvement projects that drive operational excellence. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams locally and globally, learning to apply lean and analytical methodologies to real business challenges. The programme is designed to accelerate your development as a future leader in operations, equipping you with the skills, mindset, and experience to succeed in an evolving manufacturing environment.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead and support initiatives that enhance productivity, quality, safety, and cost performance. 

  • Apply lean principles and data-driven decision making to improve processes.

  • Partner with multifunctional teams to deliver impactful project outcomes.

  • Engage in structured learning and leadership development activities.

  • Present findings and recommendations to operational and site leaders.

  • Adapt quickly to new environments, roles, and challenges during each rotation.

Location: Alajuela, Coyol

What will you need to be successful?

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering (graduation date between December 2025 and June 2026)

Experience:

  • Previous internships, co-op, part-time, or apprenticeship experience in a relevant field preferred

Competencies:

  • English Proficiency: Fluent, B2+ level (advanced speaking and writing skills)

  • Familiarity with medical devices or manufacturing standards and processes is a plus

  • Demonstrated leadership experience preferred; proven ability to lead or contribute to project teams effectively.

  • Effective written/oral, interpersonal, organizational skills

  • High learning agility — able to analyze and synthesis data, assess technical issues, and present insights clearly to senior leaders.

  • Analytical problem-solving skills and a proactive, independent mindset, balanced with strong teamwork.

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to fast-paced environments.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) is required.
