Pathology Specialist, Anatomic Pathology

Team Description:

The Pathology Team plays a critical role in the evaluation of both macroscopic and microscopic tissue samples derived from our preclinical studies. The team encompasses specialized units focused on Anatomic Pathology, Histology, Digital Pathology, and Laboratory Operations.

Job Description and Responsibilities:

We are seeking a dynamic Pathology Specialist, who will play a pivotal role within our Anatomic Pathology and Histology cores. This individual will apply foundational skills and knowledge to execute tasks within the pathology pipeline, bringing technical expertise to necropsy procedures. This role will require proactive problem-solving, efficient completion of assigned tasks, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams. 

Successful candidates will have a proven track record of excellence in anatomic pathology foundations and will have the competency to navigate and adapt to either core as necessitated by their expertise and interest. Candidates should be enthusiastic about developing their skills further, demonstrating the ability to complete tasks independently, identify areas for improvement, and effectively communicate with team members and stakeholders across the organization. Additionally, you will be expected to: 

• Independently perform animal necropsies and tissue grossing
• Conduct meticulous histological processes, including embedding, microtomy, staining, and advanced imaging techniques
• Apply judgment and discretion to operate and maintain high-throughput laboratory equipment, adjusting parameters to achieve optimal outcomes
• Document experimental findings and procedures in compliance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP) and laboratory SOPs and processes, demonstrating attention to detail and the ability to identify gaps for process improvement
• Proactively collaborate with  stakeholders (e.g., PATH cores, Pathologists, Veterinary Medicine, Preclinical) to ensure clarity and efficiency in study-related processes and sample management
• Manage inventories and ensure the correct disposal of hazardous materials, maintaining a clean and orderly laboratory environment
• Collaborate seamlessly and take ownership across all cores in the Pathology department as needed to ensure collective success

Required Qualifications:

• At least 4 years of relevant experience in an anatomic pathology function
• Adept at carrying out technical necropsy and grossing procedures within the pathology pipeline with minimal guidance, in a regulatory-compliant environment
• Familiarity with basic anatomy, physiology, and the ability to recognize tissue abnormalities
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams

Preferred Qualifications:

• BA/BS in Biology, Medical Laboratory Science, Neuroscience, or a related field
• Familiarity and experience with histological techniques
• Demonstrated ability to multitask and resolve complex issues, with a history of implementing process improvements
• Recognized by peers for deep domain knowledge and contributions to a positive work culture
• Strong organizational skills and capacity to lead by example, upholding high standards of work and enabling others to achieve their best

Additional Requirements and Competencies:

• Ability to work flexible hours, including off-hours and weekends
• Willingness to travel 
• Comfortable working in a controlled laboratory environment with potential exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes, and biohazardous materials or chemicals, including formalin
• Ability to lift and maneuver up to 45 pounds to manage large volumes of chemical waste, reposition large animals, and perform other physically demanding tasks as required
