Job Description – Vacuum Furnace Operator
Operates and monitors vacuum furnace equipment for controlled heat treatment, brazing, annealing or similar thermal processes on product components, assemblies or sub-assemblies. Loads and unloads parts using approved fixtures/tooling, follows written process documentation and validated furnace recipes, records cycle data, and supports safe, quality-focused manufacturing operations.
Roles and Responsibilities -
• Operates vacuum furnace equipment as per approved work instructions, batch records, standard operating procedures and safety requirements.
• Prepares furnace loads using fixtures, trays, baskets and tooling; verifies part identification, cleanliness, orientation and load configuration before cycle start.
• Performs pre-use checks such as chamber cleanliness, door seal condition, cooling water, compressed air, vacuum pumps, gauges, thermocouples, gas supply and general equipment readiness.
• Selects or loads the validated furnace recipe and monitors process parameters such as vacuum level, temperature ramp, soak time, gas purge/backfill and cooling cycle.
• Records production details, cycle parameters, alarms, deviations, inspection results and traceability information accurately in logbooks or electronic systems.
• Handles parts carefully before and after furnace processing to avoid contamination, mix-up, oxidation, damage or unsafe contact with hot surfaces.
• Performs basic visual checks of processed parts and promptly reports abnormal conditions such as discoloration, warpage, contamination, vacuum loss, leak indication, overheating, power interruption or cycle deviation.
• Supports routine cleaning, 5S housekeeping and basic operator-level maintenance; coordinates with maintenance or engineering for preventive maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting support.
• Adheres to EHS requirements including PPE usage, hot-part handling, gas cylinder safety, lockout/tagout expectations, emergency response and safe material movement.
• May be cross trained in additional production areas and may assist in training other employees on safe furnace operation and documentation practices.
Profile /Skills –
• Previous experience with vacuum furnace operation, heat treatment, brazing, annealing, sintering, vacuum pumps, temperature controllers, process logs, fixtures/trays, leak checks, gas handling or basic equipment maintenance is an added advantage.
• Basic computer knowledge for entering production data, viewing work instructions and recording process information.
• Ability to read and understand work instructions, furnace recipes, gauges, indicators, alarms and quality documentation.
• Ability to communicate effectively, receive instructions and promptly escalate safety, quality or equipment abnormalities.
• Proven attention to detail, cleanliness and quality-focused work habits in a controlled manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate with co-workers, maintenance, quality, engineering and leadership.
Education, exp , must have and desired skills –
• ITI / Diploma with minimum 2 years of manufacturing experience, preferably in a medical device, precision manufacturing, vacuum furnace, heat treatment, brazing or controlled production environment.
• Must follow written procedures, safety instructions, documentation practices and quality requirements consistently.
• Desired: Knowledge of vacuum furnace loading patterns, vacuum pumps, thermocouples, temperature profiles, gas purge/backfill, basic maintenance and 5S practices
