Our EM solutions deliver imaging and analytical capabilities at the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales across materials science, life sciences, electronics, and natural resources markets.</p><p></p><p><b>Field Service Engineer</b></p><p>As a <b>Field Service Engineer I</b>, you will support the installation, maintenance, and repair of sophisticated electron microscopy and analytical instrumentation. Working alongside experienced engineers, you will develop hands-on technical expertise while delivering high-quality service to customers across research institutions, universities, and industrial laboratories.</p><p></p><p>In this role, you will assist with troubleshooting systems, perform preventive maintenance, and help ensure instruments operate at optimal performance. You will build strong customer relationships while gaining exposure to a wide range of applications and advanced technologies in electron, ion, and light microscopy.</p><p></p><p>This position offers strong opportunities for technical development, mentorship, and career growth.</p><p></p><p><b>Key Responsibilities</b></p><ul><li>Assist with on-site installation, testing, and commissioning of electron microscopy systems, including:<ul><li><b><a href="https://www.thermofisher.com/search/browse/category/us/en/90184058" target="_blank">Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM)</a></b></li><li><b><a href="https://www.thermofisher.com/search/browse/category/us/en/90184060?gptExactMatch=true" target="_blank">Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM</a>)</b></li><li><b><a href="https://www.thermofisher.com/search/results?query=Focused%20Ion%20Beam&focusarea=Search%20All" target="_blank">Focused Ion Beam (FIB)</a> </b>systems</li></ul></li><li>Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure systems operate according to specifications.</li><li>Support troubleshooting and repair of system issues involving:<ul><li>Electronics and subsystems</li><li>Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems</li><li>High voltage components</li></ul></li><li>Work with senior engineers to diagnose and resolve technical issues down to the component level.</li><li>Travel to customer sites, often on short notice, to support installations, maintenance, and service needs.</li><li>Develop positive working relationships with customers, system users, and internal teams.</li><li>Provide basic training to customers on system operation and routine maintenance.</li><li>Document service activities and submit detailed field service reports.</li><li>Provide feedback to product quality and engineering teams regarding system performance.</li><li>Assist in updating and improving technical documentation and service procedures.</li><li>Follow all safety protocols and quality standards while working in laboratory and customer environments.</li></ul><p></p><p><b>Minimum Requirements</b></p><ul><li>Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related technical field or 4+ years of equivalent education and experience in electronic systems</li><li><b><span>1</span></b><span>+ years of hands-on technical experience</span> installing, troubleshooting, repairing, or calibrating sophisticated analytical equipment such as <b><a href="https://www.thermofisher.com/search/browse/category/us/en/90184058?gptExactMatch=true" target="_blank">SEM</a>, <a href="https://www.thermofisher.com/search/browse/category/us/en/90184060?gptExactMatch=true" target="_blank">TEM</a>, <a href="https://www.thermofisher.com/search/results?query=Focused%20Ion%20Beam&focusarea=Search%20All" target="_blank">FIB</a>, </b><span>or similar systems</span>.</li><li>Experience working with <span>ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems and high voltage equipment</span> preferred.</li><li> Valid driver’s license required.</li><li>Ability to travel up to up to 75%, including occasional short-notice travel.</li><li>Ability to obtain a valid passport and travel domestically and internationally as needed.</li><li>Physical ability to <span>lift up to 50 lbs.</span> and work in laboratory environments.</li><li><span>Proficiency in English required</span>, additional languages beneficial.</li></ul><p></p><p><b>Skills and Qualifications</b></p><ul><li>Strong electronics and mechanical troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose issues to the component level.</li><li>Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, schematics, and system diagrams.</li><li>Familiarity with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) principles and technology.</li><li>Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently after training.</li><li>Excellent customer service and communication skills.</li><li>Strong organizational and time management capabilities.</li><li>Proficiency with Microsoft Office and service management software.</li><li>Experience documenting service activities and preparing detailed reports.</li><li>Ability to effectively train and support customers on equipment operation.</li><li>Demonstrated commitment to safety protocols and quality standards.</li><li>Demonstrated success contributing to customer satisfaction goals.</li></ul><p style="text-align:inherit"></p><p style="text-align:left"><u><b>Compensation and Benefits</b></u></p>The hourly pay range estimated for this position Engineer I, Field Service based in California is $27.19–$41.86.<p style="text-align:inherit"></p><p style="text-align:left">This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy.
