Director of Managed Care Payer Contracting (Hybrid - Acton, MA)

The Director, Managed Care Payer Contracting will drive Insulet’s contracting, strategy setting, governance, insights, and operationalization across Insulet’s in‑market and pipeline assets. They will report to the Sr. Dir of Payer Contracts and will lead a team of contract authoring professionals while collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders across Account Management, Legal, Finance, Accounting, Compliance, and Operations.

Responsibilities

• Review complex contractual matters and serve as the department's primary escalation point.

• Provide leadership, direction, and oversight of the contracts department.
• Manage workloads, establish priorities, monitor performance, and ensure timely completion of department responsibilities.
• Coach and develop department personnel and promote consistent, efficient, and accountable practices.
• Support proposals, negotiations, contract modifications, and audits
• Identify contractual risks and ensure issues are appropriately documented and escalated.

• Innovative Contract Development: Lead the ideation, design, and implementation of novel contract models, including:
  • Value-Based Agreements (VBAs) and Outcomes-Based Pricing
  • New offerings and approaches to support product access and competitiveness in market
• Directs the team that
  • works with Account Directors to develop and execute a strategic approach to negotiations with pharmacy benefit managers to achieve best-in-class rates, terms and conditions for key accounts.  Develops brand and market access strategies by payer channel to support patient access through the creation and delivery of impactful market access resources
  • sets the strategic vision and governance for all commercial rebate and PBM contract structures, language libraries, and template standardization.
  • partners with National and Regional Account Directors, Payer Analytics, Finance, and Legal to structure customized, high-yield contracting solutions for complex market access environments.
  • Supports the Market Access launch readiness teams to ensure all US Market Access functional areas are aligned to the strategy, and all tactical elements are finalized in preparation for FDA clearance of next generation products.
• Identify and address key product barriers to access and performance by applying advanced understanding of contracting and rebating strategies, payer analytics, and payer market trends
• Manages a multimillion-dollar budget.
• Drive contract lifecycle management (CLM) optimizations, standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality controls, and compliance audit frameworks.
• Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team responsible for contract authoring, workflow oversight, and customer negotiation support.
• Overseeing a team of 4-5 direct reports
• Secure and oversee external vendors to deliver resources and strategic insights on time and within budget
• Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to assess impact of key initiatives
• Act as the subject matter expert on contractual risk mitigation, financial implications, and the translation of complex commercial terms into compliant, executable agreements.
• Proactively analyze shifts in managed care, reimbursement policies, Medicare Part D, Medicaid, and PBM dynamics to update contracting strategy accordingly.

 

Knowledge And Skills

• Strategic Thinking: Demonstrated ability to think strategically and develop innovative business models in a complex, regulated environment.
• The role requires a leader who understands the complexities of specialty product commercialization and the evolving evidence expectations of US payers.
• Deep experience in product commercialization and access strategy for launching products and maintaining access
• Previous contract strategy leadership experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech or healthcare industry, with a focus on pharmacy benefit space
• Strong understanding of specialty pharmacy and distribution strategy
• Experience developing and articulating compelling payer value propositions
• Proven track record of meeting or exceeding access objectives and goals, both as an individual and as part of a team
• Expert knowledge of US healthcare system, including gov’t and commercial payers, policy, and regulatory environment
• Excellent attention to detail and communication skills with experience presenting to internal leadership
• Experience leading and managing a team, including oversight and accountability for all team outputs, deliverables and management of deadlines
• Demonstrated ability to successfully lead cross-functional teams, influence without direct authority, foster collaboration, and succeed in a highly matrixed environment
• Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities simultaneously, and work effectively across cross-functional teams
• Experience leading and collaborating in a matrix environment.

 

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (Preferred field of study Business, Finance, Healthcare Administration)
• 10+ years of progressive experience in pharmaceutical, medical device, managed care, pricing, or market access contracting 
• 7+ years of direct people management experience

Preferred

•  Advanced Degree: MS, MBA or JD

Work Environment & Travel

• Occasional travel required for executive alignment, business meetings, and customer engagements.

Additional Information:

Compensation & Benefits: For U.S.-based positions only, the annual base salary range for this role is $158,200.00 - $237,250.00 This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation.
