Director of Finance and Accounting (Tokyo)

Moon is hiring a Director of Finance and Accounting, who will be responsible for leading the Finance function for Moon Creative Lab at both our Palo Alto, California and Tokyo, Japan studios. The Director of Finance and Accounting will oversee core accounting, tax, financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting. We are looking for a hands-on, roll up your sleeves type of professional who thrives in a global environment. 

In this position, we are looking for someone who can leverage their experience, skills, and mindset to help build scalable financial processes that support the growth of our businesses. You will work across multiple teams to achieve our ambitious agenda. Although you are based in Moon’s Tokyo studio, you will liaise with not only our Japanese vendors, Mitsui colleagues, and Moon project teams but also our contacts based in the US and other countries.

What You’ll Do at Moon 

Leading Accounting and Tax Operations

You will lead financial planning, accounting, and tax operations for Moon (PA and Tokyo Studio) and Moon Creative Ventures.

Treasury Management

You will direct treasury functions to optimize cash flow, expense, investment, and financial performance.

Financial Planning & Analysis

You will oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling to inform decision-making and strategic initiatives.

Board & Parent Company Reporting

You will manage the financial reporting to the Moon Board and Mitsui, the parent company, delivering updates and insights on company performance and projections

Regulatory & Compliance

You will ensure accuracy in financial reporting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and uphold strong internal controls and audit processes.

Audit Management & Compliance 

You will ensure the accuracy of financial reporting and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements. Responsible for upholding robust internal controls and audit processes, as well as managing and responding to audit.

Finance Team Leadership

You will lead and develop the members of the Finance Team, promoting a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement in alignment with Moon’s Core Values.

Risk Management

You will identify and manage financial risks to protect Moon’s assets, mitigate exposure, and support long-term resilience.

The Must-Haves 

• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent working experience with CPA preferred
• 10+ years of relevant experience in accounting, finance, or financial control positions
• Strong knowledge of financial regulations, accounting standards and compliance requirements
• Strong understanding of JGAAP and IFRS
• Comfort and familiarity with accounting software such as Freee and Quickbooks, as well as expense software such as Expensify
• Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to take ownership of tasks and be a self-starter in a fast paced and sometimes ambiguous environment
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in Japanese
• Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills

The Nice-to-Haves 

• Business level English, verbal and written skills
• CPA certification (either in US or Japan)
• Experience working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
• Experience in working in multicultural teams
