State of Pharma Hiring Q1 2026: Where the Jobs Are
An analysis of 50,000+ active pharma and biotech job listings reveals which therapeutic areas, departments, and company types are hiring the most — and what it means for your career.
The Big Picture
We analyzed over 50,000 active job listings across 7,800+ pharmaceutical and biotech companies to understand where the industry is hiring right now. Here are the key findings.
Therapeutic Areas: Oncology Still Leads, But Watch Immunology
Oncology continues to dominate pharma hiring, accounting for the largest share of open positions. This tracks with the ~3,000 active oncology clinical trials in our database and the dozens of checkpoint inhibitor, ADC, and bispecific programs in late-stage development.
But the fastest-growing therapeutic area is immunology. Companies with JAK inhibitors, IL-17 and IL-23 programs, and next-generation biologics are expanding their commercial and medical affairs teams aggressively. If you're looking for high-growth opportunities, immunology MSL and brand management roles are seeing the strongest demand increase.
Departments: Clinical Operations Leads Volume, Medical Affairs Leads Salary
By volume, Clinical Operations has the most open positions — driven by the sheer number of active clinical trials requiring CRAs, CTMs, and clinical project managers. Research & Development and Commercial follow closely behind.
By compensation, Medical Affairs roles command the highest average salaries, particularly Medical Science Liaison (MSL) positions at the Director level. Data Science and Clinical Development round out the top three for compensation.
The Sponsor vs. CRO Split
One of the most important distinctions in pharma hiring is whether a role is at a sponsor (pharma/biotech company) vs. a CRO (contract research organization). Our data shows:
- Sponsor-side roles typically pay 15-25% more than equivalent CRO positions
- CRO roles offer more therapeutic area variety and faster career progression
- The biggest salary gap is in Clinical Operations: Senior CRAs at sponsors earn $120K-$145K vs. $95K-$115K at CROs
H-1B Visa Sponsorship
For international professionals, visa sponsorship remains a critical factor. Our analysis of USCIS H-1B employer data shows:
- Large pharma (Pfizer, Merck, J&J) maintain 95%+ approval rates with hundreds of annual petitions
- Mid-size biotech sponsorship varies significantly — always check the company's H-1B history before applying
- CROs generally sponsor fewer positions proportionally, with most H-1B approvals going to senior/specialist roles
What This Means for Your Job Search
-
If you're in oncology: You have maximum options but also maximum competition. Differentiate by targeting companies with late-stage assets approaching commercialization — they're hiring the most aggressively.
-
If you're in immunology: This is the highest-growth area right now. Companies with IL-17, IL-23, and JAK programs are building out teams. Get in before the wave peaks.
-
If you're switching from CRO to sponsor: Target mid-size biotechs in Phase 2-3. They value CRO experience highly and often pay competitive rates to attract talent.
-
If you need H-1B sponsorship: Focus on large pharma companies with established immigration programs. Use Formulate's H-1B filter to find roles at sponsoring companies.
